William Faulkner is often considered to be the greatest writer in the America history. His fame rests largely on his novels, especially for his closely examination of the southern culture. That evening sun is a good example of it. The story opens as a reminiscence of Jefferson. Quentin Compson, one of Faulkners most memorable characters, narrates the story. Then, the time is approximately the turn of the century. The main character Nancy, a black washerwoman who takes in laundry from white people, is firstly introduced here. The narrator mentions her husband, Jesus, who looks like scared. Because Dilsey was sick, Nancy had to cook for Mr.Campson, Mrs. Campson and their children, Quentin, Caddy and Jason. Although much of the story is simply reported dialogues which are short, at the same time, many of the sentences are long and filled with adjectives and conjunctions. The two parts are put together efficiently. It makes the readers feel neither boring nor uninteresting. So do the simile and metaphor which used here, such as the description of Jesss razor scar like a piece of dirty string. They make the image of the characters much more vivid. This short story is finished around 1931. At that time, black people are prevented from voting, and white people can physically attack black people with little fear of punishment in the South. The racialism is still a serious problem. Therefore, the troubled race relations become the important backdrop of That Evening Sun naturally. Nancy, the main character in this story, is a typical African-American woman in the Jim Crow era. She was kicked in the mouth by Mr. Stovalls heel and lost her teeth merely in order to get the delayed salary. She was arrested and raped in the jail. Living in a poor cabin, Nancy could only find some bad popcorn. However, comparing with the suffering in her mind, the poor condition and the physical pain was less.
